Sewing 101

Skills learned:

• Basic machine operation: Learn to thread, wind bobbins, cut fabrics, basic machine troubleshooting

• Sewing seam allowances

• Pinning

• Pattern Layout

• Fabric Selection & Cutting

• Understanding a pattern

• Zipper insertion

Class 1: Handouts with a glossary of terms are provided in the intro email for you to print out and take notes upon in class, if desired, when we discuss tools, fabrics, notions, patterns and sewing terminology. Please look for these in your email prior to class and contact me if you have not received them lynn@byrnesewing.com Please bring a writing instrument and the printed handouts.

Class 2: Please bring all sewing supplies (listed below) including fabric to class. We will cut and quilt the fabric this week in class. A Sewing Machine in good working order is required and basic knowledge of how to wind a bobbin and thread your machine is necessary. Bringing your own? Please bring your machine’s manual, in case there are issues. I am not able to teach you how to use your machine, that is covered in our customer
care classes. If you do not have your own machine, please be sure to contact us prior to class about renting a machine for use during classes 2, 3, & 4. I will help you to wind a bobbin and thread your machine in this class if you are renting one of ours.

* Zigzag or general-purpose foot
*a Zipper foot is not necessary when using zippers by the yard By Annie (the zippers we stock)
*Quilt guide (if your machine has one),
*Matching or coordinating polyester thread for the fabrics that you choose for your bag-you may want
two different colors that match the background color of your chosen fabrics, one for the bobbin (lining)
one for the top (main)
*Seam ripper
* Machine needles Size 90/14 Topstitch
*Shears (or rotary cutter, mat and ruler) to cut fabric
* Scissors/snips-to cut threads
*Straight pins, and/or clips,
*Marking pencil or chalk
*Fabrics: 1⁄2 yd of 2 different 45" wide cotton fabrics for bag and bag lining (there are lots of options
available in the store)
*1⁄2 yd of cotton Batting (fusible fleece may also be used)
*An 18- inch non-separating zipper in a coordinating color for your bag. We sell #4.5 By Annie zippers by
the yard with up to 4 pulls/yd. Longer is better/easier to install 3⁄4 yd will make a medium and a small
bag. 1 7⁄8 yds will make all 4 sizes available in the pattern. There is plenty of fabric for both a small and
medium bag if you use the layout provided in class 2. We will make a medium bag in class.
Class 3: Insert the zipper and begin assembling the bag.
Class 4: Complete bag assembly and sew on bindings.

Skill Details:	Any skill level is welcome. No experience needed. You must bring your sewing machine to class. You must have basic knowledge of how to thread and operate your machine. If you don't have a sewing machine and would like to take the class, please book our sewing machine rental for class.
